Man in the High Castle 1914

Description

A rather parallelistic scenario based off the Man in the High Castle.  Originally Metalheadjohn and I were working on this, which is based off a scenario of his (metalheadjohn.deviantart.com/j…), in conjunction, but I finished it off alone.

Man in the High Castle 1914

  • The Central Powers won the First World War, resulting in the world being divided between Berlin, Vienna (until Austria fell and was annexed by Germany), Istanbul, and Mexico City.
  • The United States was carved up by the victorious Central Powers.  The Germans set up a puppet American Empire while the Mexicans annexed the west outright.  Both powers were uninterested in the Upper Rockies and simply let those areas serve as a wasteland.
  • As a result of the war, Germany has become a de facto military dictatorship.  The Emperor and Parliament are mere puppets.  So far, the Germans have not committed genocide, feeling that barbarism is below them.  The military, however, rules with an iron fist and reprisals are common for even the simplest acts of resistance.
  • Germany took control of India and the Trucial Emirates while the Ottomans got all other British territories in Middle East.  India proved hard to control from Berlin, so a puppet Emperor was crowned.  German administrators run most of the Indian government and play various ethnic groups against each other to keep the rather unpopular Emperor Ajit from facing a united front.
  • The former American West has been swamped by forced resettlement from Mexico with a fair bit of ethnic cleansing.  The Mexican Empire is actually a Republic, but referred to as an empire because of its size.  It sits at the center of an economic and military alliance called the Greater North American Co-Prosperity Sphere.  The Mexican Empire has its origins in the German-led end of a civil war in the early 20th century that resulted in a distributist, aristocratic republic that fought alongside the Germans in the Great War.  After the war, a rift developed between the Mexicans and Germans.  Both sides are now at the center of alliances and can accurately be described as fighting a cold war.
  • When it was clear the war would end unfavorably, many of the allied governments fled to their colonies.  The British Monarchy moved to Australia but quickly found themselves in a military dictatorship.  A state of emergency has existed for decades and the entire male population is in uniform in preparation for the widely-feared invasion by the Kriegsmarine.  Invasion literature can be found in every corner store, while in the name of security Spanish, German, Italian, Turkish, Arabic, and a host of other languages have been outlawed.  The Aboriginals and Maori have been turned into slave labor for massive irrigation projects in the Outback.
  • The French government headed to Saigon (though they control several Pacific Islands) and are now under the control of a government called the Premier Ordre.  This new leadership makes OTL pre-First World War French revanchism look tame and is more militarized than Britain.  The population of the Premier Ordre is mixed-race, as the exiled French soldiers took native wives.
  • The American government managed to escape and settle in Pago-Pago in the Territory of American Samoa.  The population is a strange mix of the descendants of naval servicemen and native Samoans.  The ethnically pure British are aghast at the fact President McCain has a Samoan wife and, by extent, a half-Samoan son.
  • These three states provide a fourth bloc, opposed to all the former Central Power states.
  • The acquisition of Arabian oil in the Great War greatly benefitted the Ottoman Empire, which has turned into an economic powerhouse which has gradually drifted away from Germany.  The Ottomans have created an image of themselves as the heir to the Caliphate, an image that is popular amongst Muslims worldwide.  Rumor has it that Islamist rebels worldwide have similarities to Istanbul closer than their rhetoric.  This funding of rebels has further widened the gap between the Ottomans and Germans while pushing the Turks towards the Mexican sphere.
  • During the division of America, the Germans decided to give the Ottomans territory at the mouth of the Mississippi as a reward for participation.  However, the territory is unprofitable for an empire half the world away and the Ottomans are considering selling this territory to Mexico or Germany.
  • Somehow the Netherlands and Sweden have managed to stay unconquered.  They are both very afraid of Germany and are heavily militarized.
  • The Empire of America is fairly loyal to Germany.  It took several years to wipe out the red resistance in the cities and Appalachia, but by the present most of the population has no wish to throw off the Hohenzollern emperor.

Now something else that would be interesting would be this Universes's Equivalent to "The Grasshopper lies heavy." It would likely involve a three way cold war like TTL, but with one outlier like Mexico. if like the book, it would be how people in TTL view an allied victory playing out. Perhaps the cold war British or French is a great power at a cold war with an Expansionist and Modernized Russian Empire, and the outlier is, in a twist reveal, the United States, whose powerful economy allowed them to manipulate the Western Entente into becoming subservient and a weird mirror to OTL Cold War plays out.

How does that sound?
